        MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
        July  20,  2021,  as Eid al-Adha Day in the State of
        New York

  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in  keeping  with
its  time-honored  traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those who
foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural diversity  which
strengthens the fabric of the communities of New York State; and

  WHEREAS,  This  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to memorialize
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 20, 2021, as Eid  al-Adha  Day
in the State of New York; and

  WHEREAS,  Eid  al-Adha  is  the  latter  of the two Islamic holidays
celebrated worldwide each year and is considered the holier of the  two;
and

  WHEREAS,  Also  referred to as Tabaski, it honors the willingness of
Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience  to
God's  command;  before  Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, however, Allah
provided a lamb to sacrifice instead; and

  WHEREAS, In commemoration of this intervention, an animal, usually a
sheep, is sacrificed ritually; one third of its meat is consumed by  the
family offering the sacrifice, while the rest is distributed to the poor
and  needy; furthermore, sweets and gifts are given, and extended family
are visited and welcomed; and

  WHEREAS, In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid  al-Adha  falls  on  the
10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, and lasts for four days; in the international
calendar,  the  dates  vary from year to year, shifting approximately 11
days earlier each year; and

  WHEREAS, This Legislative  Body  is  proud  to  acknowledge  various
cultures of people who add to the overall diversity of our State and, on
this  occasion,  we  take the opportunity to recognize the contributions
made by Muslims and extend best wishes to all of  its  members  as  they
hold   appropriate   ceremonies  to  commemorate  this  milestone;  now,
therefore, be it

  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
memorialize  Governor  Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 20, 2021, as Eid
al-Adha Day in the State of New York; and be it further

  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted  to  The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
