Assembly Resolution No. 263 BY: M. of A. Sillitti HONORING Sandra Lindsay, a nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, upon the occasion of being the first person in the United States to receive the COVID-19 vaccine WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to commend and recognize those esteemed individuals within the medical community for their extraordinary and sustained contributions to the progress of medicine and the improvement of life; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Sandra Lindsay, a nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, upon the occasion of being the first person in the United States to receive the COVID-19 vaccine; and WHEREAS, Sandra Lindsay always knew that she wanted to become a nurse; even as a child she helped take care of her grandmother in Jamaica, before immigrating to the United States 30 years ago; and WHEREAS, A true hero throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Sandra Lindsay has served as the Director of critical care nursing at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, New York, since 2016; and WHEREAS, When the pandemic first hit New York hard in March of 2020, this extraordinary woman led a team of hundreds of critical care nurses as they coped with the influx of critically sick patients; and WHEREAS, With recent and lingering skepticism of the COVID-19 vaccine, even among some of her own staff, Sandra Lindsay understood the example she could provide, especially to people of color; she further understood the legacy of unequal and racist treatment and experimentation on people of color, and knew she could provide inspiration for others; and WHEREAS, Today, Sandra Lindsay continues to lead her staff in caring for the sickest patients while promoting the vaccine which signifies hope, relief, healing, and the beginning of the end of a very dark time for all of her fellow and noble healthcare workers across the state, nation and world; and WHEREAS, In the faithful performance of her duties and responsibilities, Sandra Lindsay's ongoing efforts and notable achievements have significantly contributed to bettering the quality of life in her community; and WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure, Sandra Lindsay has continuously displayed initiative and an unrelenting commitment when pursuing the highest of goals, and she has truly served as a role model of leadership to be emulated by all; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Sandra Lindsay, a nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, upon the occasion of being the first person in the United States to receive the COVID-19 vaccine; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Sandra Lindsay.
