         KRUEGER,  PARKER,  PERKINS, SAMPSON, SAVINO, SERRANO -- read twice and
         ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee  on
         Crime Victims, Crime and Correction
       AN  ACT  to amend the correction law, in relation to requiring officials
         in corrections facilities to provide information to and  instruct  and
         assist certain prisoners in applications for Medicaid
         THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section 1. Section 618 of the correction law is amended  by  adding  a
    2  new subdivision 4 to read as follows:
    3    4.  OFFICIALS  OF  CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS SHALL PROVIDE INFORMATION
    4  AND INSTRUCTION TO AND SHALL ASSIST PRISONERS WHO WILL BE RELEASED  FROM
    5  THE  CORRECTIONAL  INSTITUTIONS IN PREPARING AND APPLYING FOR THE HEALTH
    6  INSURANCE PROGRAM KNOWN AS MEDICAID. SUCH  OFFICIALS  SHALL  NOTIFY  ALL
    7  SUCH  PRISONERS,  AT  LEAST  NINETY DAYS PRIOR TO THEIR RELEASE FROM THE
    8  INSTITUTION, OF THE MEDICAID PROGRAM, HOW TO APPLY TO  RECEIVE  MEDICAID
    9  SO THAT THEY MAY RECEIVE IT AFTER THEIR RELEASE FROM THE INSTITUTION AND
   10  HOW  TO  RECEIVE ASSISTANCE AT THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION TO APPLY FOR
   11  MEDICAID.
   12    S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
