GIANARIS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Veterans, Homeland Securi- ty and Military Affairs AN ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to authorizing the divi- sion of veterans' affairs to provide for the interment of the unclaimed remains of veterans THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: 1 Section 1. Section 353 of the executive law is amended by adding a new 2 subdivision 12-a to read as follows: 3 12-A. TO PROVIDE, IN COOPERATION WITH VETERANS SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, 4 FOR THE INTERMENT OF THE UNCLAIMED REMAINS OF VETERANS. THE STATE 5 DIRECTOR SHALL CONSULT WITH VETERANS SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS TO ANALYZE 6 THE SCOPE OF THE ISSUE OF UNCLAIMED REMAINS OF VETERANS. FOR THE 7 PURPOSES OF THIS SUBDIVISION, "UNCLAIMED REMAINS OF A VETERAN" SHALL 8 MEAN THE REMAINS OF A VETERAN THAT ARE CONSIDERED UNCLAIMED UNDER THE 9 LAWS OF THIS STATE AND/OR ANY OTHER STATE OF THE UNITED STATES. 10 S 2. This act shall take effect on the first of January next succeed- 11 ing the date on which it shall have become a law.
