        Introduced  by  Sen.  LANZA  -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Judiciary

        AN ACT to amend the judiciary law, in relation to the number of justices
          of the supreme court in the second and thirteenth judicial districts

          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section  1.  Subdivisions  2  and 13 of section 140-a of the judiciary
     2  law, subdivision 2 as amended by chapter 690 of the  laws  of  2007  and
     3  subdivision  13  as  amended by section 1 of part T of chapter 39 of the
     4  laws of 2019, are amended to read as follows:
     5    2. Second district, [forty-nine] fifty-two;
     6    13. Thirteenth district, [five] ten.
     7    § 2. Justice Thomas P. Aliotta, and his successor  in  office  on  the
     8  effective date of this act shall for the remainder of the term for which
     9  he  or she was elected or appointed be a justice of the supreme court in
    10  and for the thirteenth judicial district.
    11    § 3. Two of the additional justices of the supreme court in the  thir-
    12  teenth  judicial  district  and  two  additional justices of the supreme
    13  court in the second judicial district provided for  by  section  one  of
    14  this  act  shall  first be elected at the general election to be held in
    15  November 2022 and shall first take office  January  1,  2023.    Another
    16  three  of the additional justices of the supreme court in the thirteenth
    17  judicial district and the other justice of  the  supreme  court  in  the
    18  second  judicial  district provided for by section one of this act shall
    19  first be elected at the general election to be held in November 2022 and
    20  shall first take  office  January  1,  2024.  The  remaining  additional
    21  justice  of  the  supreme  court  in  the  thirteenth  judicial district
    22  provided for by section one of this act shall first be  elected  at  the
    23  general election to be held in November 2024 and shall first take office
    24  January 1, 2025.
    25    § 4. This act shall take effect immediately.
