       Introduced  by  Sen. KENNEDY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
         printed to be committed to the Committee on Veterans, Homeland Securi-
         ty and Military Affairs
       AN ACT to amend the civil service law,  in  relation  to  waiving  civil
         service examination application fees for veterans
         THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section 1. Paragraphs (c) and (d) of subdivision 5 of  section  50  of
    2  the  civil  service  law are relettered paragraphs (d) and (e) and a new
    3  paragraph (c) is added to read as follows:
    4    (C) NOTWITHSTANDING THE PROVISIONS OF PARAGRAPH (A) OF  THIS  SUBDIVI-
    5  SION, THE CIVIL SERVICE DEPARTMENT, A MUNICIPAL COMMISSION OR A REGIONAL
    6  COMMISSION  SHALL WAIVE THE APPLICATION FEE OF ANY CANDIDATE WHO PROVES,
    7  BY APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTARY PROOF, TO THE  CIVIL  SERVICE  DEPARTMENT,  A
    8  MUNICIPAL COMMISSION OR A REGIONAL COMMISSION THAT HE OR SHE IS A VETER-
    9  AN.  FOR  THE  PURPOSES  OF  THIS  PARAGRAPH, THE TERM "VETERAN" MEANS A
   10  MEMBER OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES WHO  SERVED  THEREIN  IN
   11  TIME  OF  WAR,  WHO WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED OR RELEASED UNDER HONORABLE
   12  CIRCUMSTANCES FROM SUCH SERVICE, WHO IS A CITIZEN OF THE  UNITED  STATES
   13  OR  AN  ALIEN  LAWFULLY  ADMITTED  FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCE IN THE UNITED
   14  STATES AND WHO IS A RESIDENT OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK  AT  THE  TIME  OF
   15  APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT.
   16    S  2.  This  act  shall take effect on the sixtieth day after it shall
   17  have become a law.
