STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 6747--A 2017-2018 Regular Sessions IN SENATE June 15, 2017 ___________ Introduced by Sen. BENJAMIN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules -- recommitted to the Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction in accordance with Senate Rule 6, sec. 8 -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT authorizing the closure of the Rikers Island correctional facili- ty; and providing for the repeal of such provision upon expiration thereof The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Notwithstanding any provision of the correction law or any 2 other provision of law to the contrary, the city of New York shall, on 3 or before July 1, 2021 close the Rikers Island correctional facility, 4 provided, that prior to such closure, the city of New York shall estab- 5 lish other facilities and/or utilize other existing facilities to be 6 operated as local correctional facilities for the city of New York. 7 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire December 8 31, 2021 when upon such date the provisions of this act shall be deemed 9 repealed.
