76th OREGON LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY--2011 Regular Session Enrolled House Concurrent Resolution 17 Sponsored by Representative KENNEMER, Senator ATKINSON (at the request of Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon) Whereas David Thompson, born in 1770, was an English-Canadian fur trader, surveyor and map-maker, known to some native peoples as 'Koo Koo Sint' or 'The Stargazer'; and Whereas David Thompson, over his career, mapped more than 3.9 million square kilometers of North America, nearly one-fifth of the continent, and has been described as the greatest land geographer who ever lived; and Whereas David Thompson, in 1784, entered into an apprenticeship with the Hudson's Bay Company and left England, never to return; and Whereas David Thompson soon emerged as a rising star in the company's surveying ranks; and Whereas David Thompson joined the North West Company in 1797 to further pursue his interest in surveying and mapping the interior of what would become Canada; and Whereas David Thompson was charged by the North West Company to find a route to the Pacific to promote access to the fur trading territories of the Pacific Northwest; and Whereas David Thompson, in 1807, crossed the Rocky Mountains and surveyed the Columbia basin, and mapped and established trading posts in Montana, Idaho, Washington and Western Canada; and Whereas David Thompson, in 1811, was the first European to navigate the full length of the Columbia River; and Whereas David Thompson also was chief surveyor for the International Boundary Survey, establishing the boundary between the United States and British North America from the Lake of the Woods to Quebec, for which he was honored as the 'Chief Surveyor and Astronomer' of the British government; and Whereas David Thompson, when he left the Pacific Northwest after 28 years, 22 of them as a trained surveyor, had traveled 55,000 miles and surveyed 1.9 million square miles of wilderness; and Whereas on June 2, 2011, as part of the David Thompson Columbia Brigade, approximately 20 Voyageur Canoes will leave Invermere, British Columbia, on a 1,200-mile trip to Astoria, Oregon, via the Kootenai, Clark Fork, Pend Oreille and Columbia Rivers and will arrive in Astoria, Oregon, on July 15, 2011, 200 years to the day after David Thompson's arrival in 1811; and Whereas one of these 25-foot Voyageur Canoes is the North American Land Surveyors' entry named the 'Koo Koo Sint'; and Whereas North American Land Surveyors is an association of professional land surveyors from British Columbia, Alberta, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; and Whereas North American Land Surveyors is pleased to participate in the David Thompson Columbia Brigade as a way to acknowledge and honor one of its own; now, therefore, Enrolled House Concurrent Resolution 17 (HCR 17-INTRO) Page 1 Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon: That we, the members of the Seventy-sixth Legislative Assembly, commend the life and achievements of David Thompson, recognize his contributions to the history of Oregon and congratulate North American Land Surveyors and professional land surveyors in Oregon for their participation in the 2011 David Thompson Columbia Brigade. ---------- Adopted by House March 16, 2011 ---------------------------------- Ramona Kenady Line, Chief Clerk of House ---------------------------------- Bruce Hanna, Speaker of House ---------------------------------- Arnie Roblan, Speaker of House Adopted by Senate May 2, 2011 ---------------------------------- Peter Courtney, President of Senate Enrolled House Concurrent Resolution 17 (HCR 17-INTRO) Page 2
