77th OREGON LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY--2013 Regular Session Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 3 Sponsored by Senators SHIELDS, HASS; Senators DINGFELDER, ROSENBAUM, Representatives GREENLICK, KOTEK, READ, WEIDNER (at the request of Archdiocese of Portland, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, Interfaith Council of Greater Portland, Islamic Society of Greater Portland, Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, Lutheran Advocacy Ministry of Oregon, Oregon Center for Public Policy, Oregon Faith Roundtable Against Hunger, Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Hunger Task Force, Oregon Muslim Citizens Alliance) Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried dedicated her life to advancing justice, building community and promoting interfaith understanding; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried was committed to the Jewish practice of { - tikkun olam - } (healing the earth), reaching out and organizing all people of faith for the common good; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried promoted respect for all people and fought against intolerance and bigotry, cofounding the Coalition Against Hate Crimes; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried was a passionate advocate against hunger, cofounding the Oregon Faith Roundtable Against Hunger and serving on the Oregon Food Bank's Board Advocacy Committee; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried shared her love of music and the joy of singing with family, friends and the broader community, using her music as an instrument for healing and harmony and opening her home and her heart to make lasting connections with people from many different traditions; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried married the love of her life, Jeff Gottfried, and raised two intelligent and compassionate daughters, Miriam and Benna, who inherited their mother's leadership traits and zest for life; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried was a leader in the Jewish community, serving as cultural arts, special events and publicity director at Mittleman Jewish Community Center, as director of the American Jewish Committee, Oregon Chapter, and executive director of the Oregon Area Jewish Committee; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013, in the presence of her loving family; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried's life was celebrated by over 1,200 people at a heartfelt memorial service where laughter, song, stories and tears were shared; and Whereas Emily Georges Gottfried will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon: That we, the members of the Seventy-seventh Legislative Assembly, honor and celebrate Emily Georges Gottfried for her extraordinary life, passionate pursuit of justice and invaluable contributions to the people of this state; and be it further Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 3 (SCR 3-A) Page 1 Resolved, That a copy of this resolution shall be presented to Emily Georges Gottfried's family as an expression of our sympathy and condolences. ---------- Adopted by Senate May 20, 2013 ---------------------------------- Robert Taylor, Secretary of Senate ---------------------------------- Peter Courtney, President of Senate Adopted by House June 12, 2013 ---------------------------------- Tina Kotek, Speaker of House Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 3 (SCR 3-A) Page 2
