A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND REMEMBER JOE W. DEVORE OF AIKEN COUNTY FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, ESPECIALLY TO AIKEN TECHNICAL COLLEGE, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF MR. DEVORE UPON HIS RECENT PASSING.
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly honors individuals who freely give of their time and resources for the good of others; and
Whereas, the late Joe W. DeVore of Aiken County stood high among their number, much admired for his years of unceasing effort to make the Aiken area a better place to live and Aiken Technical College a leader in higher education; and
Whereas, born May 25, 1933, in Honea Path, Joe DeVore served his country as a first lieutenant in the United States Army in Germany. He received a bachelor's degree from Furman University and graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Banking of the South; and
Whereas, Joe DeVore rose to the position of executive vice president of Regions Bank, formerly Palmetto Savings Bank of South Carolina. He served as senior lending officer and senior credit officer for the South Carolina division of Regions Bank. He was also a former senior vice president of Bankers Trust of South Carolina; and
Whereas, in 1975, South Carolina Governor James B. Edwards appointed him to a seat on the Aiken County Commission for Technical and Comprehensive Education, a position to which Mr. DeVore was reappointed for eight terms under six governors; and
Whereas, he served continuously on the Aiken County Commission for thirty-five years, from his appointment in November of 1975 to his untimely passing on June 26, 2010; and
Whereas, in addition, he served as chairman of the Aiken Technical College Commission for eleven years, from 1997 to 2008; and
Whereas, he provided wise leadership and stewardship as a commissioner during the tenure of four college presidents; and
Whereas, believing strongly in active service to one's community, Joe DeVore was also past president of Aiken County Heart Association, founding president of Aiken Junior Achievement, past treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, originating board member of Helping Hands, and charter member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Aiken; and
Whereas, a man of family and faith, he was a dedicated husband, father of two sons, and grandfather of three, and he worshipped at Aiken's First Baptist Church, being a member of the Faith Explorers Sunday School class; and
Whereas, his service, loyalty, and devotion to his family, his friends, and his State were admired by all who knew him, and he will be remembered with affection and gratitude for many years to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and remember Joe W. DeVore of Aiken County for his many years of outstanding community service, especially to Aiken Technical College, and extend the deepest sympathy of the South Carolina General Assembly to the family and friends of Mr. DeVore upon his recent passing.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Joe W. DeVore.
