A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE DR. DAVID A. NORMAN ON THE OCCASION OF HIS INAUGURATION AS THE FIFTEENTH PRESIDENT OF ERSKINE COLLEGE & SEMINARY.
Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn that on Friday, April 29, 2011, Dr. David A. Norman will be inaugurated as the fifteenth president of Erskine College & Seminary in Due West; and
Whereas, David Norman grew up in Georgia and Alabama as part of a Christian family and holds connections to Erskine stemming from his formative years. During that time, he and his brother attended soccer camp at Erskine, an experience that sent him home with fond memories of the school; and
Whereas, in preparation for his life's work, David received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University. While a student there, he married K.D., his high school sweetheart, and they will celebrate their fourteenth wedding anniversary on June fourteenth. Since their marriage, the Lord has blessed the couple with three fine boys, Noah, Asher, and Ezra; and
Whereas, after earning his master's degree in Christian thought at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, David Norman went to the University of Edinburgh and was awarded a doctorate in philosophical theology; and
Whereas, he then served several years as a professor of philosophy and religious studies at the University of South Carolina in Lancaster. Joining in the life of the community, the Normans became members of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. Their two older sons were baptized in that church, and Dr. Norman was ordained as a deacon there; and
Whereas, he next became executive director of the prestigious Trinity Forum Academy, a highly selective graduate program in applied philosophy and theology. In his role with the academy, Dr. Norman was responsible for recruitment, finances, board relations, student development, staff management, teaching, fund-raising, and all operational matters; and
Whereas, while at Trinity Forum, he was recruited to join Best and Associates, a Dallas-based higher-education consulting and service organization. During his association with Best, he continued to develop his experience and knowledge in the business and best practices of higher education; and
Whereas, Dr. Norman's vision for Erskine, one of the best Christian liberal arts colleges in the country, centers around three basic principles: academic integrity, financial sustainability, and service to the poor. Rightly observing that poverty is not always merely material, he notes that genuine service to the poor "flows naturally from a gospel-centered state of the heart" and that the gospel of Jesus Christ is described as "good news to the poor"; and
Whereas, cognizant of his distinguished record as biblical scholar, educator, businessman, and administrator, the General Assembly takes great pleasure in extending a cordial welcome to Dr. Norman, as well as to his wife, K.D., and his sons, Noah, Asher, and Ezra. The members pray God's blessings on Dr. Norman as he is inaugurated as president of Erskine College & Seminary. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and congratulate Dr. David A. Norman on the occasion of his inauguration as the fifteenth president of Erskine College & Seminary.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. David A. Norman.
