A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF JAMES PAUL GREENE OF OCONEE COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of James Paul Greene of Oconee County on January 14, 2012, at the venerable age of ninety-one; and

Whereas, born in Walhalla on July 29, 1920, Paul Greene was the son of James Empsey and Amanda Pearl Greene and stepmother Dora Ramey Greene; and

Whereas, Mr. Greene saw historic duty during his twenty-two year Naval military career, from being on board the USS Detroit on the morning of December 7, 1941 when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, to being in Tokyo Bay after Japan surrendered; and

Whereas, following his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Greene returned to his native Oconee County and settled in Mountain Rest, where he raised cattle, sold apples from the five hundred trees he planted, and later retired from Kendall; and

Whereas, believing a man should be involved in his community, he was a charter member of Mt. Freedom Baptist Church and a member of Hejaz Shrine, Clemson York Rite, Blue Ridge Masonic Lodge #92, American Legion Post #124, Fleet Reserve Association Branch #15, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, USS Detroit and USS Philippine sea associations, and Disabled American Veterans Association; and

Whereas, in addition, numerous area residents remember with gratitude the wonderful role model Paul Greene was to the Boy Scouts of his community and how he always made himself available to answer their many questions; and

Whereas, preceded in death by his first wife, Kaye Greene, he leaves to cherish his memory his present wife, Keiffer; his daughter, Karen Greene Riddle; two stepdaughters, Joan Platte and Cindy Edens; eight step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, and four step-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of James Paul Greene of Oconee County and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Keiffer Greene for the family.
