A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ERECT AN APPROPRIATE SIGN AT THE EASTBOUND EXIT RAMP ONTO SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 341 FROM INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 20 IN LEE COUNTY CONTAINING THE WORDS "IN MEMORY OF SERGEANT MIKKOS L. NEWMAN".

Whereas, Sergeant Mikkos Leonard Newman was a graduate of Morris College and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy; and

Whereas, Sergeant Newman began his law enforcement career with the Pageland Police Department as a patrolman first class and ended his career as a sergeant after sixteen years with the Lee County Sheriff's Office; and

Whereas, beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their jobs, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted Covid-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement personnel died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community; and

Whereas, tragically, on June 8, 2020, at the age of thirty-eight, Sergeant Newman died from Covid-19 after contracting the virus while on duty; and

Whereas, he is survived by his parents, four children, and a host of other relatives and friends; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to recognize Sergeant Newman's service to his community by memorializing his legacy at a highway facility in Lee County. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request the Department of Transportation erect an appropriate sign at the eastbound exit ramp onto South Carolina Highway 341 from Interstate Highway 20 in Lee County containing the words "In Memory of Sergeant Mikkos L. Newman".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
