A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE KERSHAW COUNTY ON BEING NAMED A 2018 ALL-AMERICA CITY AWARD WINNER AND TO APPLAUD THE COUNTY'S CITIZENS FOR THE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT THAT BROUGHT THEM THIS COVETED HONOR.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Kershaw County has been named a 2018 All-America City Award winner; and

Whereas, the award presentation, held in Denver on June 24, 2018, saluted Kershaw County as one of ten All-America City Award winners. The National Civic League presented this honor to Kershaw County to recognize its work in inclusive civic engagement to address critical issues and create stronger connections among residents, businesses, and nonprofit and government leaders. During the ceremony, the county was praised for engaging residents in visioning, using all sectors to support student success, and using schools to improve healthcare availability; and

Whereas, all applicants submitted their work on equity and civic engagement and three projects for consideration, and the field was narrowed to twenty. Then, finalist communities presented their projects and their communities to a jury. The entire presentation took the form of a wellness bus tour, with community members, program partners, and city and county officials singing and showing how the county is being reimagined for the benefit of all; and

Whereas, in addition to the All-America City Award, the delegation earned two other awards. Clinton Washington, a 2018 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School, won the Youth Award for extraordinary community leadership. Further, the delegation brought home the social media award for best and creative utilization of social media across all platforms to engage citizens and feature the community. Johnny Deal spearheaded the social media campaign; and

Whereas, members of the winning delegation were Sophia Leone Alteri, Caroline Brianna Anderson, Julian Hall Burns, Jr., Jaelen Bussey, Laurey S. Carpenter, Victor Joseph Carpenter, Carl Michael Conley, John Milton Deal, Jr., Kimberly Calvert Dixon, Richard Allen Dixon, Jr., Alfred Mae Drakeford, Melissa S. Emmons, Amy Stenger Eudy, Laurie Slade Funderburk, Joseph Edward Garrison, Evelyn W. Gibson, George E. Gibson, Jr., Catherine Lynch Goff, Tyler Hampton, Kathryn Erin Johnson, Roberta Langley, Jerry Dale Marthers, Regina German Marthers, Brian Mayes, Laurie Marie Parks, Daniel Ryan Putnam, Julie I. Putnam, Shawn Brian Putnam, Merri Meadows Seigler, Katherine O'Sullivan Spadacenta, Sammie Tucker, Jr., Clinton James Washington III, and Susan C. Witkowski. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Kershaw County on being named a 2018 All-America City Award winner and applaud the county's citizens for the civic engagement that brought them this coveted honor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Julian Burns, Chairman of Kershaw County Council, PLAY Foundation, Melissa Emmons, Mayor of Elgin, and Alfred Mae Drakeford, Mayor of Camden.
