A concurrent RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF CASHUA DRIVE IN THE CITY OF FLORENCE IN FLORENCE COUNTY FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH SECOND LOOP ROAD TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 76 "CURTIS KERSHAW SUMMERFORD MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE SIGNS OR MARKERS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY CONTAINING THESE WORDS.
Whereas, Curtis "Curt" Kershaw Summerford, was born July 10, 1966, the youngest child of the late Curtis Kershaw Summerford Jr. and his wife Gisela Summerford, in Florence, South Carolina. He was a 1985 graduate of West Florence High School, attended the University of South Carolina, and went on to pursue his passion of law enforcement; and
Whereas, Curt, as he was affectionately called, enjoyed a thirty-four year career in law enforcement serving in many positions and rising to the rank of lieutenant with the Florence County Sheriff's Office. During his decades of service, he is credited with the seizure of millions of dollars in drugs, cars, and cash; and
Whereas, in 1990, he married the love of his life, Michelle Pigate, with whom he had three beautiful children -Joshua, Zachary, and Jessica. A devoted father and husband, Curt had a passion for serving his community. The most important thing in his life was his faith in the Lord which endured throughout his illness; and
Whereas, in addition to his career in law enforcement, Curt maintained a landscaping business, and often could be found in his shop "fixing things." He was fervent in helping others be it a friend or a stranger. He had a contagious smile, and no conversation was complete without a joke. When spending time in his recliner, Curt's loyal companion Zeke was ever present; and
Whereas, following a battle with traumatic injury, Curt passed away on July 9, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Though he suffered severe pain, his faith never waivered and he stayed strong until the end; and
Whereas, it is only fitting and proper that we honor this son of the Palmetto State for his selfless devotion to God and tireless dedication to his community by naming a portion of Cashua Drive in the City of Florence in his memory. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of Transportation name the portion of Cashua Drive in the City of Florence in Florence County from its intersection with Second Loop Road to its intersection with United States Highway 76 "Curtis Kershaw Summerford Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate signs or markers along this highway containing these words.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
