| studies curriculum used in the public schools. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by | ||
| adding Subsection (s) to read as follows: | ||
| (s) The essential knowledge and skills for social studies, | ||
| as modified and adopted by the State Board of Education in 2010, | ||
| have no effect. The board may not issue a request for production of | ||
| textbooks reflecting those essential knowledge and skills or | ||
| require school districts to provide instruction based on those | ||
| essential knowledge and skills. As soon as possible after | ||
| September 1, 2011, the board shall initiate a new review of the | ||
| essential knowledge and skills for social studies. Pending | ||
| completion of that new review, school districts shall provide | ||
| instruction in social studies on the basis of the essential | ||
| knowledge and skills in effect during the 2010-2011 school year. | ||
| This subsection expires September 1, 2013. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
| a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
| provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
| Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
| Act takes effect September 1, 2011. | ||
