| extracurricular competitions. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Chapter 33, Education Code, is amended by adding | ||
| Section 33.0813 to read as follows: | ||
| Sec. 33.0813. SCHOOL DISTRICT POLICY ON STUDENT | ||
| PARTICIPATION IN CERTAIN EXTRACURRICULAR COMPETITIONS. (a) The | ||
| University Interscholastic League shall not adopt or enforce any | ||
| rule that limits the ability of an independent school district to | ||
| adopt a policy that allows one or more high schools from that | ||
| district to sponsor academic or fine arts teams in | ||
| school-sanctioned academic or fine arts competitions as | ||
| representatives of their school on the basis of whether or not a | ||
| competition takes place on a Sunday. | ||
| (b) The University Interscholastic League shall not adopt | ||
| or enforce any rule that penalizes a student competitor who | ||
| participates in one or more academic or fine arts competitions that | ||
| take place on a Sunday if their independent school district has | ||
| adopted a policy permitting their high school to sponsor | ||
| participants in Sunday competitions. | ||
| (c) This section does not prohibit the adoption or | ||
| enforcement of rules that limit participation based on academic, | ||
| disciplinary or other relevant grounds. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013. | ||
