| relating to required notice to high school students and parents or | ||
| guardians regarding a student's receipt of certain awards, | ||
| recognitions, and scholarship opportunities. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 28, Education Code, is | ||
| amended by adding Section 28.0261 to read as follows: | ||
| Sec. 28.0261. NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS, AND | ||
| SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. The board of trustees of a school | ||
| district and the governing body of an open-enrollment charter | ||
| school shall notify each high school student enrolled at the | ||
| district or school and the student's parent or guardian as soon as | ||
| practicable after the school receives information indicating that | ||
| the student: | ||
| (1) has earned an award or recognition; or | ||
| (2) is eligible for a scholarship opportunity as a | ||
| result of the student's achievement, including the student's | ||
| qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 | ||
| school year. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
| a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
| provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
| Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
| Act takes effect September 1, 2023. | ||
