relating to required notice to high school students and parents or | ||
guardians regarding a student's receipt of certain awards, | ||
recognitions, and scholarship opportunities. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 28, Education Code, is | ||
amended by adding Section 28.0261 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 28.0261. NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS, AND | ||
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. The board of trustees of a school | ||
district and the governing body of an open-enrollment charter | ||
school shall notify each high school student enrolled at the | ||
district or school and the student's parent or guardian as soon as | ||
practicable after the school receives information indicating that | ||
the student: | ||
(1) has earned an award or recognition; or | ||
(2) is eligible for a scholarship opportunity as a | ||
result of the student's achievement, including the student's | ||
qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
