A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the requirement that an applicant for a license to
practice medicine recite the Hippocratic oath.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Section 155.002, Occupations Code, is amended by
amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (c) to read as
follows:
(a) The board, at its sole discretion, may issue a license
to practice medicine to a person who:
(1) submits to the board a license application as
required by this chapter;
(2) presents satisfactory proof that the person meets
the eligibility requirements established by this chapter; [and]
(3) satisfies the examination requirements of Section
155.051; and
(4) recites the Hippocratic oath, as provided by
Subsection (c).
(c) The board by rule shall provide the text of the
Hippocratic oath that each applicant must recite under Subsection
(a). The board shall adopt rules on the manner by which an applicant
may satisfy the requirement under Subsection (a)(4).
SECTION 2. Section 155.002(a), Occupations Code, as amended
by this Act, applies only to a person who submits a license
application to the Texas Medical Board on or after January 1, 2014.
A person who submits a license application to the Texas Medical
Board before January 1, 2014, is governed by the law in effect on
the date the license application was submitted, and the former law
is continued in effect for that purpose.
SECTION 3. Not later than December 31, 2013, the Texas
Medical Board shall adopt the rules required by Section 155.002(c),
Occupations Code, as added by this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
