WHEREAS, The Muslim American residents of Texas have | ||
benefited our state in countless ways over the course of many | ||
decades, and their achievements are indeed deserving of | ||
recognition; and | ||
WHEREAS, The state with the fifth largest Muslim population | ||
in the nation, Texas is home to an estimated 500,000 people who | ||
practice Islam, with the majority of those residents living in the | ||
cities of Houston and Dallas; moreover, Texas has the largest | ||
Muslim population in the southern U.S., and more than 330 mosques | ||
and Islamic centers are located in the state; and | ||
WHEREAS, Countless members of Texas' Muslim American | ||
community have devoted their lives to service, extending support | ||
and assistance to individuals across the state through charitable | ||
donations and civic organizations; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Muslim community fosters compassion and peace | ||
through the tenets of Islam, which include zakat (giving) as an | ||
obligatory religious practice; and | ||
WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in Texas have distinguished | ||
themselves in a broad range of endeavors, including as medical | ||
professionals, first responders, and teachers who have | ||
demonstrated an exceptional commitment to serving their fellow | ||
residents; in addition, Muslims have had an important influence in | ||
business, politics, technology, the arts, and numerous other | ||
fields; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Muslim American community is an integral part of | ||
the Lone Star State's vibrant and diverse mix of cultures, and the | ||
observance of Muslim Heritage Month offers a welcome opportunity to | ||
celebrate the meaningful contributions of its members; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
hereby designate May as Muslim Heritage Month; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section | ||
391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect | ||
until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally | ||
passed by the legislature. |
