| WHEREAS, Kathy Shannon retired as executive director of the | ||
| Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in Midland on October 1, 2023, | ||
| drawing to a close many years of outstanding service; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Ms. Shannon joined the Petroleum Museum as director | ||
| of education in 1995, and in that role, she oversaw the addition of | ||
| the organization's transportation wing, which uses Chaparral race | ||
| cars to educate visitors on the scientific principles of | ||
| aerodynamics and physics; in November 2004, she assumed her | ||
| position as executive director; over the course of a tenure | ||
| spanning nearly two decades, the museum opened an educational hall | ||
| and a mineral gallery highlighting mineral specimens from across | ||
| the globe, underwent an $18 million renovation of its petroleum | ||
| exhibits, and launched its state-of-the-art STEAM education | ||
| center; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Over the years, Ms. Shannon has contributed to her | ||
| profession as board president of the Texas Association of Museums | ||
| from 2011 to 2012 and as a member of the Permian Basin Museum | ||
| Association; in 2016, she was presented with the TAM President's | ||
| Award; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Ms. Shannon has also given back to the greater | ||
| community by serving on the board of the Trinity School of Midland | ||
| and by collaborating with the Texas Education Agency on revising | ||
| the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills test through the Texas | ||
| Energy Council; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Petroleum Museum has benefited immeasurably | ||
| from Kathy Shannon's leadership and her unwavering commitment to | ||
| the institution's mission, and she may indeed reflect with pride on | ||
| all that she has accomplished; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
| hereby congratulate Kathy Shannon on her retirement from the | ||
| Permian Basin Petroleum Museum and extend to her sincere best | ||
| wishes for the future; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Ms. Shannon as an expression of high regard by the | ||
| Texas House of Representatives and Senate. | ||
