WHEREAS, In the course of her long and accomplished career as | ||
a beautician, Elida Gutierrez Garcia has built a successful | ||
business in Benavides, and her work is greatly appreciated by | ||
numerous area residents; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born to Doniaciano and Carmen Gutierrez on July 17, | ||
1936, the former "Lela" Gutierrez grew up with eight brothers and | ||
sisters; she attended school in Benavides until she had to give up | ||
her studies to help support the family; in 1963, she moved to Corpus | ||
Christi to attend Stevenson's Beauty School and earned her | ||
certificate in just six months, even while working to pay for her | ||
room and board; and | ||
WHEREAS, This skilled beautician began her career at Selfa's | ||
Beauty Shop in Alice before returning to Benavides, where she was | ||
employed at shops owned by Jovita Carrillo and Emma Couling | ||
Martinez; in 1966, she opened her own business, Lela's Beauty Shop, | ||
beginning a successful venture that has served the city for more | ||
than four decades; and | ||
WHEREAS, In 1970, she married Guadalupe M. Garcia, and the | ||
couple welcomed their son, Guadalupe, two years later; Mrs. Garcia | ||
took an eight-month break from her career at the time the baby was | ||
born but returned to work after building a new shop next door to her | ||
house; and | ||
WHEREAS, The business has continued to operate at that | ||
location ever since, and through the years Mrs. Garcia has | ||
generously devoted herself to meeting the needs of her clients; she | ||
performs home visits for the ill, elderly, and handicapped and | ||
provides transportation to her shop to those who need it; she has | ||
further contributed to her community through her work with Santa | ||
Rosa de Lima Catholic Church, where she and Mr. Garcia are | ||
parishioners; and | ||
WHEREAS, With her talent, dedication, and concern for others, | ||
Lela Garcia has proven herself a successful entrepreneur who has | ||
made a positive difference in the lives of several generations of | ||
customers, and she may reflect with pride on her many achievements; | ||
now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Elida Gutierrez | ||
Garcia on her career accomplishments as a beautician and extend to | ||
her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mrs. Garcia as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
