WHEREAS, Following a 16-month closure during the COVID-19 | ||
pandemic, the Calaboose African American History Museum in San | ||
Marcos celebrated its official reopening on June 19, 2021; and | ||
WHEREAS, The event took place on Juneteenth, which | ||
commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves in the | ||
U.S.; the CAAHM reopening celebration featured a talk by | ||
Dr. Leonard Moore, the George Littlefield Professor of American | ||
History at The University of Texas at Austin, and showcased a new | ||
exhibit that depicts generations of local Black-owned businesses; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, Established in 1997, CAAHM is located inside the | ||
first jail in Hays County, which was constructed in 1873; when the | ||
second county jail was built in 1884, the calaboose was used to | ||
house Black prisoners; the building served as a USO facility for | ||
Black soldiers during World War II and as a community center and | ||
café; it was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in | ||
1990; and | ||
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Calaboose African American | ||
History Museum has dedicated itself to preserving African American | ||
history and culture in Hays County, and in so doing, it has | ||
established itself as an invaluable educational resource and a | ||
center of support for the community; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas | ||
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commemorate the reopening | ||
of the Calaboose African American History Museum and extend to all | ||
those associated with the institution sincere best wishes for the | ||
future; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the museum and its staff as an expression of high | ||
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
