| WHEREAS, Following a 16-month closure during the COVID-19 | ||
| pandemic, the Calaboose African American History Museum in San | ||
| Marcos celebrated its official reopening on June 19, 2021; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The event took place on Juneteenth, which | ||
| commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves in the | ||
| U.S.; the CAAHM reopening celebration featured a talk by | ||
| Dr. Leonard Moore, the George Littlefield Professor of American | ||
| History at The University of Texas at Austin, and showcased a new | ||
| exhibit that depicts generations of local Black-owned businesses; | ||
| and | ||
| WHEREAS, Established in 1997, CAAHM is located inside the | ||
| first jail in Hays County, which was constructed in 1873; when the | ||
| second county jail was built in 1884, the calaboose was used to | ||
| house Black prisoners; the building served as a USO facility for | ||
| Black soldiers during World War II and as a community center and | ||
| café; it was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in | ||
| 1990; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Calaboose African American | ||
| History Museum has dedicated itself to preserving African American | ||
| history and culture in Hays County, and in so doing, it has | ||
| established itself as an invaluable educational resource and a | ||
| center of support for the community; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas | ||
| Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commemorate the reopening | ||
| of the Calaboose African American History Museum and extend to all | ||
| those associated with the institution sincere best wishes for the | ||
| future; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for the museum and its staff as an expression of high | ||
| regard by the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
