WHEREAS, Bellaire High School in the Houston Independent | ||
School District received the AP Computer Science Female Diversity | ||
Award from College Board; and | ||
WHEREAS, College Board is a national nonprofit organization | ||
dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in education, and it | ||
also administers a number of college readiness and success | ||
programs, including the Advanced Placement Program; the AP Computer | ||
Science Female Diversity Award honors schools that have achieved | ||
either 50 percent or higher representation of female exam takers in | ||
one or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of female | ||
exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school's female | ||
population; of the 20,000 institutions that offer AP courses, fewer | ||
than 1,200 schools nationwide reached that worthy goal; and | ||
WHEREAS, Historically, female students have remained | ||
underrepresented in computer science classes, and according to the | ||
National Girls Collaborative Project, women represent just 26 | ||
percent of professionals in the fields of computer and mathematical | ||
sciences today; and | ||
WHEREAS, Providing female students with access to computer | ||
science courses is vital to ensuring gender parity within the | ||
industry, and the AP Computer Science program at Bellaire High | ||
School is empowering young women to build an even brighter future as | ||
they work to become the next generation of STEM and computer science | ||
professionals; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Bellaire High School on its receipt | ||
of the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from College | ||
Board and extend to all those associated with the school sincere | ||
best wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives. | ||
