| WHEREAS, Bellaire High School in the Houston Independent | ||
| School District received the AP Computer Science Female Diversity | ||
| Award from College Board; and | ||
| WHEREAS, College Board is a national nonprofit organization | ||
| dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in education, and it | ||
| also administers a number of college readiness and success | ||
| programs, including the Advanced Placement Program; the AP Computer | ||
| Science Female Diversity Award honors schools that have achieved | ||
| either 50 percent or higher representation of female exam takers in | ||
| one or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of female | ||
| exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school's female | ||
| population; of the 20,000 institutions that offer AP courses, fewer | ||
| than 1,200 schools nationwide reached that worthy goal; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Historically, female students have remained | ||
| underrepresented in computer science classes, and according to the | ||
| National Girls Collaborative Project, women represent just 26 | ||
| percent of professionals in the fields of computer and mathematical | ||
| sciences today; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Providing female students with access to computer | ||
| science courses is vital to ensuring gender parity within the | ||
| industry, and the AP Computer Science program at Bellaire High | ||
| School is empowering young women to build an even brighter future as | ||
| they work to become the next generation of STEM and computer science | ||
| professionals; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby congratulate Bellaire High School on its receipt | ||
| of the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from College | ||
| Board and extend to all those associated with the school sincere | ||
| best wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
| House of Representatives. | ||
