WHEREAS, The Houston Independent School District is marking | ||
the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2023; and | ||
WHEREAS, A free secondary school system was created in the | ||
area in 1877, and it became the Houston Independent School District | ||
in 1923; the district expanded its reach four years later, founding | ||
a community college which subsequently became the University of | ||
Houston; it also established one of the nation's first high schools | ||
for health professions; and | ||
WHEREAS, Today, Houston ISD serves nearly 190,000 students at | ||
274 campuses; it is the largest school district in Texas and the | ||
eighth largest in the nation, and it has taken in students from | ||
other areas over the years, including those displaced by Hurricane | ||
Katrina; the district offers 128 magnet programs focused on | ||
science, college and career, fine arts, and language immersion; in | ||
recognition of its substantial gains in student achievement, it won | ||
the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2002 and 2013; and | ||
WHEREAS, Houston ISD benefits from the able leadership of its | ||
board of directors and its current superintendent, Dr. Rod Paige; | ||
with 27,000 employees, the district is one of the largest employers | ||
in Houston; and | ||
WHEREAS, For the past century, Houston ISD has provided | ||
generations of young Texans with a strong foundation on which to | ||
build, and it is indeed a privilege to join in marking this | ||
important milestone in its rich history; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Houston | ||
Independent School District and extend to all those associated with | ||
the district sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Houston ISD as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. |
