WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their | ||
memories of Alberto Barrera of Rio Grande City, who died on January | ||
14, 2018, at the age of 87; and | ||
WHEREAS, The son of Bonifacio and Antonia Barrera, Alberto | ||
Barrera was born in Rio Grande City on August 17, 1930, and grew up | ||
with six siblings, Eduardo, Bonifacio, Benicio, Rogelio, Angelica, | ||
and Sylvia; he shared a rewarding marriage with his wife, Celia, | ||
that spanned 61 years, and he was the proud father of four children, | ||
Armandina, Alberto, Arnoldo, and Ambarina; later in life, he | ||
welcomed into his family eight grandchildren, José, Justin, | ||
Jocelin, Alberto, Adan, Armando, Araceli, and Connor, and a | ||
great-granddaughter, Juliette; and | ||
WHEREAS, After graduating from Rio Grande City High School in | ||
1948, Mr. Barrera attended Pan American Junior College and went on | ||
to receive his bachelor's degree from Texas A&I College in 1952; he | ||
subsequently answered his nation's call to duty by serving in the | ||
U.S. Army for two years before embarking on a long and distinguished | ||
career as an educator; over the course of more than five decades, he | ||
taught for the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School | ||
District, Pan American University, and South Texas College; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Barrera also earned an impressive reputation as | ||
a folklorist and artist, performing his compositions across the | ||
United States and in Spain and Mexico, and he conducted extensive | ||
studies in his field at such institutions as Colgate University, | ||
Oklahoma State University, Universidad de Mexico, the University of | ||
North Texas, Universidad de Burgos España, and La Universidad de | ||
Madrid en España; and | ||
WHEREAS, Alberto Barrera lived a rich and purposeful life | ||
dedicated to his family, his profession, and his artistry, and he | ||
leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all those who | ||
were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas | ||
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory | ||
of Alberto Barrera and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives | ||
and many friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alberto | ||
Barrera. | ||
