R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Monigold family of Marshall has deep roots in |
|
Harrison County, and they are indeed deserving of recognition for |
|
their contributions to the history and heritage of the Lone Star |
|
State; and |
|
WHEREAS, John C. Monigold, Sr., his wife, Jennie, and his |
|
brother Jonas settled in Marshall about 1900; the two men were |
|
masons and helped build many courthouses and municipal buildings in |
|
East Texas; Jennie Monigold was active in her church and was |
|
well-known for traveling by horse and buggy to attend "Mother's |
|
Clubs," an early form of the PTA; she embodied the family spirit of |
|
independence by starting her own business in her late 60s; Mrs. |
|
Monigold lived to be 101 years old, and her enterprise remains a |
|
going concern; and |
|
WHEREAS, Leonard Monigold, a son of John and Jennie Monigold, |
|
married Genevieve Langley, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Morgan |
|
LaNoue Langley; the Langley family arrived in Texas from Tennessee |
|
in the 1850s; in 1854, they purchased land in the vicinity of the |
|
present-day community of Scottsville; Thomas Langley served with |
|
Hood's Brigade in the Civil War and later worked as a surveyor in |
|
Harrison County; and |
|
WHEREAS, Leonard and Genevieve Langley Monigold enjoyed a |
|
marriage of 65 years; Leonard Monigold, a resident of Marshall for |
|
more than eight decades, was a mason, like his father, and a labor |
|
union advocate; he taught the family's traditional craft to his |
|
son, William, who still resides in Marshall; high-spirited |
|
Genevieve was a poet, newspaper columnist, and suffragist, and when |
|
women got the vote, she waited on the judge's steps until midnight |
|
in order to become one of the first registered female voters in |
|
Harrison County; many of her writings are housed in the library of |
|
the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs in Austin; and |
|
WHEREAS, Leonard and Genevieve Monigold had five children, |
|
four of whom remained lifelong residents of Marshall; their oldest |
|
son, Leonard Jackson "Jack" Monigold, became a tile contractor and |
|
married Betty Hintz, who is actively involved in the Republican |
|
Party; and |
|
WHEREAS, The civic inclinations of this profoundly Texan |
|
family continue today; several members of the family have spent |
|
their careers in the statehouse, and the family's youngest member, |
|
Langley Franks, can often be seen in the halls of the Capitol, which |
|
has been a second home to her since infancy; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through the years, the contributions made by John |
|
and Jennie Monigold and their descendants have become interwoven in |
|
the compelling story of the Lone Star State, and it is indeed |
|
fitting that their achievements be acknowledged at this time; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor the Monigold family of Marshall for |
|
enriching the history of our state and extend sincere best wishes |
|
for future success and happiness to all the members of this |
|
distinguished clan; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the family as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
