WHEREAS, Proud residents of Lewisville are celebrating the | ||
100th anniversary of their city's incorporation with a series of | ||
events in 2025; and | ||
WHEREAS, Situated in southeastern Denton County within the | ||
Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Lewisville traces its origins to the | ||
early 1840s, when the Texas Immigration and Land Company was given | ||
an empresario grant by the Republic of Texas to bring 600 families | ||
to the region; in 1844, the families of John and Augustus King and | ||
John and James Holford were among the first to settle in the area, | ||
which became known as Holford Prairie; subsequently, Basdeal Lewis | ||
bought the Holford properties and established Lewisville in 1853; a | ||
post office was constructed that same year, and by the late 1860s, | ||
the town included a gristmill, a cotton gin, and a church; and | ||
WHEREAS, Lewisville experienced rapid growth after the | ||
arrival of the Dallas and Wichita Railway in 1881; nearly four and a | ||
half decades later, on January 15, 1925, residents voted in favor of | ||
incorporation, marking the beginning of the municipality, and the | ||
first official town meeting was held on March 16 of that year; and | ||
WHEREAS, Today a city of more than 133,000 people, Lewisville | ||
boasts a thriving, historic downtown district with new commercial | ||
and residential development; citizens and visitors alike enjoy | ||
camping, hiking, and bird-watching at the Lewisville Lake | ||
Environmental Learning Area, a nature preserve spanning over 2,000 | ||
acres, and annual family-friendly events include Lewisville | ||
Western Days, Lewisville ColorPalooza, the Sounds of Lewisville | ||
concert series, Fiesta Charra, and the St. Paddy's Texas Style | ||
festival; and | ||
WHEREAS, Since its incorporation a century ago, Lewisville | ||
has distinguished itself as a vibrant and prosperous community, and | ||
the celebration of this significant milestone provides an ideal | ||
opportunity to recognize the city's rich history; now, therefore, | ||
be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of Lewisville and | ||
extend to its residents sincere best wishes for the future. |
