BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter E, Chapter 31, Election Code, is | ||
amended by adding Section 31.125 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 31.125. VOTER EDUCATION FOR PERSONS CONFINED IN JAIL. | ||
(a) The secretary of state, the authority in charge of the jail in | ||
each county, and the early voting clerk of each county shall take | ||
appropriate action to: | ||
(1) inform each qualified voter confined in jail of | ||
the voter's right to vote; and | ||
(2) provide the qualified voter an opportunity to | ||
vote. | ||
(b) The authority in charge of the jail shall allow a person | ||
who is qualified to vote and confined in jail access to a voter | ||
registrar or deputy voter registrar for the purpose of submitting | ||
an application to register to vote. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021. |
