relating to the inclusion of a mental health course in the required | ||
curriculum for public high school students. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (c-5) to read as follows: | ||
(c-5) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules | ||
requiring students to complete at least one mental health course | ||
while in high school that satisfies the requirements of Subsection | ||
(a)(2)(B)(ii) and includes: | ||
(1) instruction regarding: | ||
(A) depression; | ||
(B) anxiety; | ||
(C) eating disorders; | ||
(D) schizophrenia; and | ||
(E) other mental health disorders; and | ||
(2) information about cultivating coping skills and | ||
seeking available mental health services. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2022-2023 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2021. |
