WHEREAS, The celebration of University of Houston-Downtown | ||
Day at the State Capitol on February 26, 2025, provides a fitting | ||
opportunity to recognize this notable institution; and | ||
WHEREAS, Established in 1974, the University of | ||
Houston-Downtown has built a reputation as a welcoming campus with | ||
an accessible location in the heart of Houston; the university | ||
serves more than 14,000 students annually and boasts over 71,000 | ||
alumni, and it benefits from the able leadership of its seventh | ||
president, Dr. Loren J. Blanchard; and | ||
WHEREAS, The student body at UHD is highly representative of | ||
the vibrant Houston community; approximately 70 percent of the | ||
university's freshmen are first-generation college students, 58 | ||
percent receive Pell Grants, and 65 percent transfer from | ||
partnering community colleges; and | ||
WHEREAS, Today, UHD offers 45 bachelor's degrees, 12 master's | ||
degrees, and 24 opportunities for online degree completion, | ||
including five graduate programs; moreover, the institution has | ||
been designated a comprehensive regional university by the Carnegie | ||
Classification of Institutions of Higher Education; and | ||
WHEREAS, The university has four distinct academic colleges, | ||
including the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the | ||
College of Public Service, the College of Sciences and Technology, | ||
and the Marilyn Davies College of Business; currently, UHD is | ||
working to develop the Center for Crime, Urban Research, and | ||
Education to help shape the future of public safety in Southeast | ||
Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, UHD ranks as one of the most affordable institutions | ||
of higher learning in the state; moreover, it maintains a | ||
commitment to civic engagement, social mobility, and economic | ||
impact in the city of Houston; and | ||
WHEREAS, For half a century, the University of | ||
Houston-Downtown has helped area residents improve their lives and | ||
gain a greater foothold in the thriving Texas economy, and it has | ||
prepared its alumni to be leaders in their communities and beyond; | ||
now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature | ||
hereby recognize February 26, 2025, as University of | ||
Houston-Downtown Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome | ||
to the visiting delegation. |
