| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize Dr. Kenneth I. Shine, who is retiring as executive vice | ||
| chancellor for health affairs at The University of Texas System | ||
| after nearly 10 years of outstanding service; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. Shine has played a vital role in the management | ||
| and guidance of the system's six health institutions and their | ||
| aggregate operating budget of almost $8.4 billion; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In his work with the university, Dr. Shine brought | ||
| to bear 10 years of experience as president of the Institute of | ||
| Medicine; under his leadership, the institute addressed such key | ||
| issues in the field of medicine as quality of care, patient | ||
| safety, child development, and the availability and side effects | ||
| of vaccines; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Dr. Shine has focused his | ||
| efforts on meeting the medical needs of all Americans; he has | ||
| organized symposia on the importance of cultural sensitivity in | ||
| health care and has supported programs to increase immunization | ||
| rates, decrease tobacco use among adolescents, and improve care | ||
| for dying patients; and | ||
| WHEREAS, An exemplary physician and administrator, Dr. Shine | ||
| is respected and admired by his colleagues, and his presence at | ||
| The University of Texas System will be greatly missed; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
| on his exceptional service to The University of Texas System and | ||
| extend to him best wishes for continued success in all his | ||
| endeavors; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. | ||
