John P. Vittas | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
commemorates the life of John P. Vittas, who died February 11, | ||
2013, at the age of 68; and | ||
WHEREAS, John Vittas was born October 16, 1944, in Queens, | ||
New York; he attended Brooklyn Technical High School, where he | ||
was a standout player on the school's New York City football | ||
championship team in 1960; he went on to graduate from C. W. Post | ||
College of Long Island University with a degree in industrial | ||
management and engineering; and | ||
WHEREAS, While attending college, Mr. Vittas met the love | ||
of his life, Wendy, and the couple married in 1968; they shared 44 | ||
years of marriage together and raised three daughters, Jennifer, | ||
Melissa, and Amy; they were blessed with nine grandchildren; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Vittas enjoyed a long and productive career | ||
with American Airlines; he began his career as a passenger | ||
service agent at New York's LaGuardia Airport and rose through a | ||
series of management positions to become manager of freight | ||
services at John F. Kennedy International Airport; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Vittas later became cargo standards director | ||
for the airline's parent company, AMR Corporation, headquartered | ||
in Fort Worth, and when the corporation created a subsidiary to | ||
provide contract airport ground services, he joined the new | ||
company in New York and led it to a position of prominence in its | ||
field; he retired in 2011 after serving as senior vice president | ||
of the company that had become Worldwide Flight Services; and | ||
WHEREAS, John Vittas was a man of courage, strength, and | ||
compassion who gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, | ||
and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and | ||
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured | ||
forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of John P. Vittas; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of John Vittas. | ||
