SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 438
         WHEREAS, When they married, on March 12, 1961, on a snowy
  day in Omaha, Nebraska, Katie and Jim Reed made a lifetime
  commitment to each other, and their mutual trust has been amply
  rewarded, for they are now celebrating their 50th wedding
  anniversary; and
         WHEREAS, The world has changed considerably during the
  years of their marriage, yet Mr. and Mrs. Reed have cherished
  traditional family and moral values and have grown stronger in
  their devotion to one another; and
         WHEREAS, Katie Reed began her career as a teacher and has
  been a tireless advocate for public education; she has served as
  president of the Texas Association of School Boards and is a
  well-known community leader; she is a recipient of the Dolph and
  Janey Briscoe Lifetime Achievement Award from United Way for her
  many community volunteer activities, and she was inducted into
  the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame; and
         WHEREAS, Jim Reed held numerous executive positions during
  his more than 31 years of service with Southwestern Bell; he has
  also held a leading role with the American Heart Association in
  South Texas and is currently president of the San Antonio Medical
  Foundation; active in community affairs, he has also served on
  the boards of numerous other civic and charitable organizations;
  and
         WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Reed have been blessed with a
  wonderful family, and they are beloved and respected by their
  children, Philip Reed and Holly Reed, and their three
  grandchildren, Bailey, Alexandra, and Jack; and
         WHEREAS, Katie and Jim Reed are leading San Antonio
  citizens; in addition to their community work, they have long
  been avid sports fans, and they are active members of First
  Presbyterian Church in San Antonio; the long and happy union of
  Mr. and Mrs. Reed is truly an inspiration to all who know them;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to Katie and Jim Reed
  on their 50th wedding anniversary; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  this distinguished couple as a memento of this special day in
  their lives.
