WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens | ||
of Andrews County and Texans across the state in celebrating | ||
March 1, 2017, as Andrews County Day at the State Capitol; and | ||
WHEREAS, Situated on the high plains of the Permian Basin, | ||
Andrews County was established in 1876 and formally organized in | ||
1910 with Andrews as its county seat; it is named for Richard | ||
Andrews, an early settler and soldier in the revolutionary army, and | ||
the first man to die in the Texas War for Independence in 1835; and | ||
WHEREAS, Andrews County has long been a leader in the | ||
ranching industry in Texas; the county also became an important | ||
source of cotton and sorghum with the advent of the widespread | ||
use of windmills; it experienced an impressive oil boom during | ||
the 1940s and has recently experienced the greatest period of | ||
growth and development in its history; the county remains one of | ||
the state's leading producers of oil and gas, having just | ||
produced its three billionth barrel of oil since 1929; and | ||
WHEREAS, With unprecedented support from the citizens, | ||
elected representatives, and civic organizations of the area, | ||
Andrews County hosts the most advanced secure facility for the | ||
disposal of Class A, B, and C low-level radioactive waste in the | ||
United States; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Andrews Independent School District is noted | ||
for academic excellence, with its teams having earned top honors | ||
at numerous University Interscholastic League academic | ||
competitions; and | ||
WHEREAS, The people of Andrews County enjoy an abundance of | ||
recreational opportunities, including the Andrews County Golf | ||
Course, and many exemplary area parks; the county boasts an | ||
annual Wild, Wild West Fest and a State Championship BBQ | ||
Cook-off; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Andrews County on | ||
their many contributions to the rich history of our state and | ||
extend to them best wishes for a memorable Andrews County Day at | ||
the State Capitol; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in | ||
honor of this special day. | ||
