AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE
(Proposed by the House Committee on Public Safety
on January 19, 2024)

A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 22.1-199.8, relating to Careers in Law Enforcement and Firefighting Incentive Grant Program established.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 22.1-199.8 as follows:

§22.1-199.8. Careers in Law Enforcement and Firefighting Incentive Grant Program.

A. With such funds as may be appropriated for such purpose pursuant to the general appropriation act, the Department shall establish and administer the Careers in Law Enforcement and Firefighting Incentive Grant Program (the Program) whereby any school board may apply for a grant, to be awarded on a competitive basis, with which to offer courses relating to criminal justice, law enforcement, or firefighting in at least one public high school in the local school division.

B. The Department shall establish such rules, regulations, processes, procedures, and deadlines as it deems necessary for the proper administration of the Program.
