WHEREAS, Ryan Krank, a Boy Scout and eighth-grade student at Yorktown Middle School, received the Boy Scout of America's Heroism Award in 2009 for his courage and diligence in the successful rescue of a fellow citizen; and WHEREAS, the Heroism Award honors a Scout who has "demonstrated heroism and skill in averting serious injury or saving or attempting to save a life at minimum risk to himself," and only 3,000 Heroism Awards have been presented since the prestigious honor was established in 1923; and WHEREAS, Ryan Krank is a member of Boy Scout Troop 226, which is led by Scoutmaster Howard Fenker and sponsored by Providence United Methodist Church in Yorktown; and WHEREAS, in May 2009, Ryan Krank was on a camping trip with his family in Ocracoke, North Carolina, where he and his dad enjoy kayaking in the surf; the beach area, however, is also known for strong and often dangerous riptides; and WHEREAS, Ryan Krank and his father, Mike Krank, were relaxing on the shore after kayaking when people on the beach spotted three women struggling in the rough waters; two of the women made it to a sandbar, but the third was quickly being carried out to sea by a strong current; and WHEREAS, realizing the danger of the situation, both father and son immediately realized that Ryan would have the best chance of saving the woman by paddling out alone in his kayak to help her; and WHEREAS, without hesitation, Ryan Krank set out through the waves, and even though his kayak flipped over, he reached the woman and with the aid of another man brought her safely to shore; and WHEREAS, praised for his selfless actions, Ryan Krank was heralded as a hero by the woman and her party, as well as by his friends and family, but was totally surprised when Scoutmaster Fenker presented him with the Heroism Award, which included a certificate and uniform patch and medal, during a meeting of Boy Scout Troop 226 on November 16, 2009; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Ryan Krank for his bravery and persistence in the successful rescue of a fellow citizen; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ryan Krank as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude and admiration for his courageous and commendable actions. |
