HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 217
Celebrating the life of David Wayne DeHart.

WHEREAS, David Wayne DeHart of Radford, a respected citizen and an outstanding banking executive and community leader, died on January 4, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Radford, David DeHart was born on November 22, 1954, the son of the late Joseph W. and Louise T. DeHart; graduated from Radford High School in 1974; and earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1979; and

WHEREAS, a gifted athlete, David DeHart played football under legendary coach Norman Lineburg when the Bobcats won the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group AA football state championship in 1971 and 1972; and

WHEREAS, David DeHart ran track for the Radford High School Bobcats indoor and outdoor track teams when they won the VHSL state championship in 1972 and 1973; and he was the individual state indoor and runner-up outdoor pole vault champion in 1974; and

WHEREAS, a 5'9" 180-pound linebacker at Virginia Tech in his freshman year, David DeHart was known as the smallest starting defensive end in Division I football, and he became a three-year letterman and started at defensive end his senior season; he also was a graduate assistant defensive end coach under Bill Dooley; and

WHEREAS, David DeHart was an outstanding banker with 28 years of experience and the executive vice president of StellarOne Bank, managing the Commercial Division, Secondary Mortgage Division, and Treasury Management Division for the bank; and

WHEREAS, before joining StellarOne Bank, David DeHart was the president and chief executive of First National Bank in Christiansburg and the president of SunTrust Bank in Radford; and

WHEREAS, David DeHart generously gave his time and expertise to many professional and civic organizations over the years, including as president and board member of the Montgomery-Radford-Floyd United Way, the Radford University Foundation, Inc., and many other Radford University boards and advisory councils; as chair and board member of the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance and the Radford City Industrial Development Authority; as board member of the New River Community College Educational Foundation and the Radford Bridges project; and as president and member of the Radford Noon Rotary Club, the Lexington Rotary Club, and the Virginia Horse Center Foundation; and

WHEREAS, David DeHart was a faithful member of Grove United Methodist Church and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, David DeHart will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Marian Osborne DeHart; his son, James Michael DeHart; his three brothers and their families; and his many good friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, David Wayne DeHart; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David Wayne DeHart as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
