WHEREAS, Tina Garfield, an esteemed Spanish educator at Princess Anne High School, was named the Virginia Beach City Public Schools' Citywide Teacher of the Year for 2024; and
WHEREAS, Tina Garfield graduated from Princess Anne High School and credits the Spanish teachers she had while a student in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) with inspiring her own path to becoming an educator; and
WHEREAS, Tina Garfield has been teaching for more than 26 years and received her National Board Certification in 2019; and
WHEREAS, using various resources and teaching methods, including music, art, stories, photos and souvenirs from her travels, and more, Tina Garfield creates culturally immersive experiences for her students to enhance their language studies and give them a richer understanding of the Spanish-speaking world; and
WHEREAS, in addition to serving as a sponsor of Princess Anne High School's Spanish Honor Society, Tina Garfield supports the growth and development of her colleagues by leading professional development sessions for teachers; and
WHEREAS, Tina Garfield has previously served on VBCPS committees to organize its Beach Girls Rock! empowerment workshop and its annual African American Male Summit to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, beyond teaching, Tina Garfield gives generously of her time in service to the community as a volunteer with Families of Autistic Children Coming Together in Virginia Beach; and
WHEREAS, Tina Garfield has embodied the highest principles of the teaching profession through her unwavering commitment to her students, helping to make Virginia Beach a more wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Tina Garfield for being named the 2024 Virginia Beach City Public Schools' Citywide Teacher of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tina Garfield as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her achievement and appreciation for her dedication to the Commonwealth's students.
