HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 283
Commending Michael S. Yew.

WHEREAS, following the 2023 season, Michael S. Yew retired as head coach of the football team at Central High School in Woodstock, ending an illustrious 17-year tenure with the team; and

WHEREAS, when Michael Yew took the helm of the Central High School football program, the team had yet to win a playoff game in its history; and

WHEREAS, after going 2–18 his first two seasons, Michael Yew built the Central High School football program into one of the most successful in the Commonwealth, taking the team to the playoffs 11 times in his last 15 seasons; and

WHEREAS, Michael Yew's achievements as head coach of the Central High School football team include a career record of 121–71, a playoff record of 18–11, five district championships, and two regional championships, both of which came in the last three seasons; and

WHEREAS, in 2022, Michael Yew brought the Central High School Falcons all the way to the Virginia High School League state championship game; in his last season, he led the team to an undefeated regular season for only the second time in program history; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his accomplishments with the Central High School football team, Michael Yew has received Regional Coach of the Year honors twice and District Coach of the Year honors six times; and

WHEREAS, before joining Central High School, Michael Yew honed his abilities as a leader of young men as a coach at the Massanutten Military Academy, where he won a conference championship during his three years with the team; and

WHEREAS, Michael Yew has had a profound and lasting impact on the more than 200 student-athletes who have passed through his program over 17 years, leaving a legacy that will be celebrated at Central High School for years to come; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Michael S. Yew on the occasion of his retirement as head coach of the Central High School football team; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael S. Yew as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his contributions to the Commonwealth.
