HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 289
Commending Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area.

WHEREAS, for more than 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area has transformed the lives of young people in Danville and Pittsylvania County by providing positive role models and opportunities for one-to-one mentoring and care; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area traces its roots to 1973, when a Danville judge who was concerned about the number of young people in the justice system formed a mentorship program for boys; the program was later combined with a similar program for local girls and became affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area has grown to serve more than 100 at-risk youths each year through a variety of programs, including community-based outings, where children are paired with trustworthy volunteers who take them to sporting events, movies, and other activities; and

WHEREAS, volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area may also visit a child in school for lunch to talk about their lives and check on their grades, and the organization has facilitated engaging programs on agriculture, the arts, aviation, and other interests; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area partners with Woodrow Wilson Intermediate School and the United Way, and it has cultivated ties with other local organizations to continue providing new services to participants; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area commemorated its 50th anniversary with a special birthday party in June 2023, followed by a recognition event for several prominent volunteers; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area has fulfilled its mission through the generosity and kindness of generations of volunteer mentors, the passionate leadership of its board members and staff, and the vital support of local businesses and community partners; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's commitment to enhancing the lives of young people through positive interactions and mentorship.
