WHEREAS, in 2016, George Mason University achieved a place among the top research institutions in the United States when it was ranked by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education; and WHEREAS, George Mason University was ranked in the Doctoral Universities-Highest Research Activity category, joining an elite group of only 115 institutions throughout the nation; the university was awarded the prestigious honor based on a review of its 2013 - 2014 data, that was performed by the Center for Postsecondary Research at Indiana University School of Education; and WHEREAS, during the review period, George Mason University's research expenditures had grown to $99 million, driven largely by increases in science and engineering research; the university also increased the number of doctoral degrees conferred by 27 percent; and WHEREAS, students and faculty at George Mason University have made important contributions to biomedical research, neuroscience, cybersecurity, information technology, and other scientific fields; and WHEREAS, as the largest public research institution in the Commonwealth, George Mason University's focus on science and engineering compliments its traditional strengths in economics and social sciences; the university has won numerous awards and accolades, including two Nobel Prizes in economics; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend George Mason University on being ranked one of the top research institutions in the country by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ángel Cabrera, president of George Mason University, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the university's role as a source of knowledge and innovation in the Commonwealth. |
