WHEREAS, the Western Branch High School boys' track and field team of Chesapeake won the Virginia High School League Class 6 indoor track and field state championship on February 27, 2024; and
WHEREAS, the Western Branch High School Bruins tallied 54.6 total team points to outpace the runner-up by 8.6 points and bring home a state championship title; and
WHEREAS, the Western Branch Bruins saw Antonio Smith place first in the 55-meter hurdles, fourth in the 300-meter dash, sixth in the triple jump, seventh in the high jump, and eighth in the long jump; and
WHEREAS, the Western Branch Bruins were also lifted by James Craig, who placed second in the shot put; Micah Hinton, who placed second in the 55-meter hurdles, fourth in the 55-meter dash, and fourth in the triple jump; Ky'Nique Baines, who placed 16th in the 300-meter dash; and Gregory Taylor, who placed sixth in the long jump; and
WHEREAS, the Western Branch Bruins received further support from the 4 x 400-meter relay team, which placed third in its event; and
WHEREAS, the Western Branch Bruins were led to victory by head coach Yolanda Golden and assistant coaches Patrick Boone, Keith Bailey, and Alette McGuire; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Western Branch Bruins is the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire Western Branch High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Western Branch High School boys' track and field team for winning the 2024 Virginia High School League Class 6 indoor track and field state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Yolanda Golden, head coach of the Western Branch High School boys' track and field team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's achievement.
