Commending Robert R. Lindgren.

WHEREAS, Robert R. Lindgren, who has served as president of Randolph-Macon College since 2006, leading a 19-year period of strategic transformation for this historic institution during an era of extraordinary change, will retire in 2025; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lindgren shepherded a transformation of the physical campus of Randolph-Macon College (RMC) in Ashland, which boasts 17 new or renovated buildings, all paid for with private support of more than $110 million; and

WHEREAS, during Robert Lindgren's tenure, RMC added 14 academic programs and majors, including a bachelor's degree program in nursing, a major in engineering, and a master's degree in physician assistant studies; the college also added a broad range of curricular, extramural, and athletic opportunities, including men's volleyball and equestrian teams, show choir, orchestra, wind ensemble, and esports; and

WHEREAS, thanks to his stewardship of the college's alumni, parents, and friends, fundraising during Robert Lindgren's tenure exceeded $240 million and consistently put RMC in the top 30 of all colleges and universities nationwide for percentage of alumni who support the institution; and

WHEREAS, the transformations that occurred under Robert Lindgren's leadership helped to usher in enrollment growth of more than 50 percent for RMC during his tenure; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lindgren was known as “the students' president” for his accessibility and interest in their well-being; during his tenure, the college maintained numerous distinctions, including a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and a strong reputation for career preparation that saw RMC included as a “Best Career Services” school by The Princeton Review; and

WHEREAS, RMC's 18 National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division III teams flourished under Robert Lindgren's leadership, earning 37 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships, six regional NCAA titles, nine NCAA Division III quarterfinal wins, four NCAA Division III semifinal wins, and a national championship during his tenure; Robert Lindgren is a devoted fan who attended dozens of games and matches of all sports each year; and

WHEREAS, prior to joining RMC, Robert Lindgren made a significant impact on other institutions of higher education, serving as vice president for development and alumni relations at both the Johns Hopkins Institutions and the University of Florida; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lindgren served on local, state, and national boards for professional organizations, including the Council of Independent Colleges, the NCAA Division III Presidents Council, the CASE Board of Directors, the Governor's Higher Education Commission (2010-12), the Richmond Forum, and ChamberRVA; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lindgren earned both a bachelor's degree in business administration and a juris doctor degree from the University of Florida, as well as a master of philosophy in management studies from Oxford University; he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Florida in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lindgren and his wife, Cheryl, are fixtures in the Town of Ashland, which they have embraced over their 19 years in residence; they are parents to three grown children and have two grandchildren, who are all part of the Yellow Jacket community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Robert R. Lindgren, president of Randolph-Macon College, on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert R. Lindgren as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his contributions to higher education in the Commonwealth.
