Commending WSVA.

WHEREAS, WSVA, a news and talk radio station based in Harrisonburg, has informed and entertained the residents of the Central Shenandoah Valley for 90 years; and
WHEREAS, WSVA, also known as We Serve Virginia Agriculture, first signed on the air on June 9, 1935, and was the first radio station to broadcast in the Shenandoah Valley; and
WHEREAS, WSVA was originally owned by Frederick L. Allman and was an affiliate of the NBC Red Network, carrying news, sports, dramas, comedies, soap operas, game shows, and big band programs during the “Golden Age of Radio”; and
WHEREAS, WSVA thrived and established the Shenandoah Valley's first FM radio station, which is now known as WQPO, and created a television station, which is now WHSV-TV; and
WHEREAS, with network programming transitioning from radio to television in the 1950s, WSVA adopted a middle of the road radio format, offering music, news, and sports; the station was sold several times over the years and is currently owned by Saga Communications; and
WHEREAS, transmitting on 550 AM and 92.1 FM from its headquarters on Heritage Center Way, WSVA's current weekday lineup begins with Early Mornings with Frank Wilt and Jim Britt, followed by news and agricultural reports, and an afternoon drive time show, as well as nationally syndicated talk programs and updates from CBS News Radio; and
WHEREAS, on the weekends, WSVA features programs on car repair, home repair, travel, and gardening and additional syndicated programs on a variety of topics; the station also covers local high school sports and James Madison University sports; and
WHEREAS, WSVA has touched the lives of countless listeners over the years by raising awareness of important news and current events, highlighting local businesses and organizations, and fostering a strong sense of community in the region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend WSVA on the occasion of its 90th anniversary of broadcasting high quality radio programming; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to WSVA as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the radio station's longevity and important contributions to generations of Central Shenandoah Valley residents.
