HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 747 Celebrating the life of the Honorable William Wellington Jones.

WHEREAS, the Honorable William Wellington Jones, a distinguished attorney, highly admired former judge of the 5th Judicial District of Virginia, and active member of the Suffolk and Nansemond County communities, died on January 25, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Driver, William Jones graduated from Chuckatuck High School and earned bachelor's and law degrees from The College of William and Mary; he also served his country as a member of the United States Navy, achieving the rank of lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, beginning in 1947, William Jones practiced law in Suffolk; he became a judge in Nansemond County in 1949, then became the Commonwealth's Attorney of Nansemond County in 1954; and

WHEREAS, William Jones was appointed as a judge of the Suffolk General District Court of the 5th Judicial District of Virginia in 1978; he presided with great fairness and wisdom until his well-earned retirement from the bench in 1991; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as a judge, William Jones was respected for his knowledge of the law and commitment to justice; and

WHEREAS, William Jones also worked to enhance the quality of life of his fellow residents as a member of American Legion Post 57, the Driver Ruritan Club, and the local Lions Club; and

WHEREAS, William Jones was proud of his family's heritage in the region; he was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and a charter member and president of the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, William Jones served the Commonwealth with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and distinction; he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable William Wellington Jones, a respected judge and admired member of the Suffolk and Nansemond County communities; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable William Wellington Jones as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
