WHEREAS, the WHEREAS, Newport News Rotary Club's Access to Career Education (ACE) program helps to fund underemployed adults to make a career advancement, engaging with the workforce development arms of Thomas Nelson Community College and New Horizons Regional Education Centers; and WHEREAS, the Newport News Rotary Club has provided support for student scholarships at Christopher Newport University; and WHEREAS, the Newport News Rotary Club has for 20 years held a Children's Fishing Clinic, each year providing poles and instruction to teach hundreds of children to fish; and WHEREAS, the Newport News Rotary Club has helped to plant scores of flowering trees in the Mariners' Museum Park; and WHEREAS, the Newport News Rotary Club has helped numerous local and national charities, including the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, Smart Beginnings of the Virginia Peninsula, Youth Challenge, the Peninsula School for Autism, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, the American Cancer Society, the Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross; and WHEREAS, the Newport News Rotary Club has participated with other Rotarians around the world in an effort to eradicate polio from the face of the earth; and WHEREAS, the Newport News Rotary Club has helped the world at large through teaming with Bridges to Prosperity to build footbridges in Nicaragua, Zambia, Haiti, and Rwanda; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Newport News Rotary Club hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2016; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to McKim Williams, Jr., president of the Newport News Rotary Club, as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect and admiration for the club's many years of service to the people of Newport News, the Commonwealth, and the world. |
