HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 189
Commending Little Bethel Baptist Church.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 23, 2013

WHEREAS, Little Bethel Baptist Church in Dinwiddie County will proudly celebrate its 145th anniversary on May 19, 2013; and

WHEREAS, organized in 1868 under the leadership of Reverend C. M. Mason, Little Bethel Baptist Church's members first met at a bush shelter near the site of the church's present-day location on Flatfoot Road; and

WHEREAS, Little Bethel Baptist Church members then built a log church where they worshipped until an increase in membership necessitated the construction of a larger building, which was built on land donated by Alston Woodly, the husband of the Mother of the Church, Nancy Woodly; and

WHEREAS, Little Bethel Baptist Church continued to grow in faith and numbers over the years, adding a choir under the leadership of Reverend N. T. Cooper, hearing inspiring words from Reverend Richard Ash, organizing the Busy Bee Missionary Circle during Reverend A. Ponton's tenure, and starting the Young People's Working Club under the direction of Reverend J. J. Woodson; and

WHEREAS, in 1946 Reverend W. H. Winston became pastor and Little Bethel Baptist Church added an education annex with a basement and pulpit furniture and installed a Hammond organ and central heat; and

WHEREAS, in 1972 the Little Bethel Baptist Church building was destroyed by fire, but area churches graciously opened their doors and the congregation met at Little Zion Baptist Church until its new structure was dedicated in 1974; and

WHEREAS, Little Bethel Baptist Church was then ably served by the Reverends Irving Friend and Carl Fogle; in 1980 Reverend David L. Banks, Sr., who still serves the congregation today, became pastor; and

WHEREAS, Little Bethel Baptist Church has continued to expand and refurbish much of the building while also adding new ministries to serve the congregation and provide outreach to the community; and

WHEREAS, today, Little Bethel Baptist Church looks back with gratitude for the leadership provided by its pastors and the spiritual growth of its members and looks forward to continuing to serve the congregation and community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Little Bethel Baptist Church hereby be commended on the occasion of its 145th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Reverend David L. Banks, Sr., pastor of Little Bethel Baptist Church, as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and admiration for the church's commitment to serving its congregation and the community.
