HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 256
Commending the Prince William County 250 Committee.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 4, 2024
 

WHEREAS, the General Assembly established the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission in 2020 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War, and the independence of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission granted cities and counties the opportunity to create local committees; and

WHEREAS, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors established the Prince William County 250 Committee in 2022 to educate and commemorate the founding of the United States; and

WHEREAS, in response to Virginia's House of Burgesses vocal support for the people of Massachusetts, Royal Governor Lord Dunmore dissolved the Virginia House of Burgesses on May 26, 1774; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Prince William County convened on June 6, 1774, in the Town of Dumfries to propose several resolves to protest and resist the actions of British Parliament against the American colonies, which were some of the earliest such resolves passed in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Prince William County and the Town of Dumfries will host public programming commemorating the Prince William Resolves on June 6–8, 2024 in the Town of Dumfries; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Prince William County 250 Committee hereby be commended for its work to honor the legacy of the Prince William Resolves and the history of the nation; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Prince William County 250 Committee as an expression of the House of Delegates' appreciation for the role Prince William County and the Town of Dumfries played in the founding of the United States.
