HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 320
Commending Northern Virginia Family Services.

WHEREAS, Northern Virginia Family Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission "to empower individuals and families to improve their quality of life, and to promote community cooperation and support in responding to family needs," commemorates its 100th anniversary in 2024; and

WHEREAS, Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) was established by a group of volunteers in Alexandria in 1924 to help impoverished families in the area meet their basic and critical needs, such as having coats and coal for heat in winter time; and

WHEREAS, NVFS has blossomed over the years into a multifaceted organization with programs and services addressing an array of issues, including early childhood development, foster care and adoption, homelessness and housing, health and well-being, immigration legal services, mental health, youth initiatives, and workforce development; and

WHEREAS, NVFS has adapted its programs and broadened its service region over the years to meet the problems of the day, with the organization currently serving upwards of 35,000 individuals across the Northern Virginia Region; and

WHEREAS, NVFS has been called upon in times of great tragedy, leading the Survivors' Fund Project to provide direct assistance and long-term case management to 9/11 victims, first responders, and their families, as well as the Katrina Project, in partnership with the American Red Cross, to aid evacuees of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina; and

WHEREAS, NVFS supports education initiatives at all stages of learning, from managing Arlington County's Head Start preschool program to partnering with Northern Virginia Community College for its Training Futures workforce development program; and

WHEREAS, NVFS has merged with distinguished organizations over the years to diversify and expand its impact in the community, including the Center for Multicultural Human Services and SERVE; and

WHEREAS, the success of NVFS is the result of indefatigable efforts of the organization's staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters, who strive mightily to promote the self-sufficiency and well-being of Northern Virginia's most vulnerable residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Northern Virginia Family Services hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Northern Virginia Family Services as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's history and its legacy of service.
